How to choose commission software
- Start from your data. Commission software is only as good as the deal data it reads. List where bookings, billing and payroll live, and check native integrations first.
- Test your hardest rule. Ask each vendor to configure your messiest real case — a retroactive tier, a split with an override, a clawback — not a demo plan.
- Check what reps will see. A rep who can trace every line of a payout raises fewer disputes.
- Ask finance what it needs. Audit trail, approvals and ASC 606 amortization are deal-breakers for some teams and irrelevant for others.
- Price the whole thing. Per-payee licence, platform fee, implementation and internal admin time.

Frequently asked questions
What is sales commission software?
Software that calculates variable pay from your CRM, billing and HR data, applies the plan rules (tiers, accelerators, splits, clawbacks), and gives reps and finance a statement they can check. Larger platforms are often called incentive compensation management (ICM) or sales performance management (SPM).
How is the overall ranking computed?
Each tool is scored on the same 21 criteria (pricing transparency, plan rules, controls, integrations). Each criterion weighs the average of its weight for small business, mid-market and enterprise teams, so no team size is favoured. The score is the share of that weight the tool documents on its own pages. For a ranking tuned to your size, open the small business, mid-market or enterprise page.
Do vendors pay to be ranked?
No. We have no commercial agreement with any vendor today. If we earn referral fees in the future, they will be disclosed next to the ranking and will never change the order or the criteria.
What does "not verified" mean?
We could not confirm the fact on the vendor's own public pages. It does not mean the vendor lacks the capability. In the score it earns no points, because the ranking measures what a buyer can confirm publicly today.
Do I need software at all?
Not always. Below roughly two dozen payees with a single simple plan, a well-built spreadsheet is often enough. Our six-question check gives you a reasoned answer.
